Section 3.1 - Exponential & Logistic Functions

Picture

Essential Question(s):

How are the exponential and logistic functions similar and different?

Follow these three steps to complete this "flip" lesson.
STEP 1: Preparation
Title your spiral with the heading above and copy the essential question(s).
STEP 2: Vocabulary & Examples
Copy and define the following of vocabulary. This can be any tables, properties, theorems, terms, phrases or postulates listed. Review the following examples and copy what is necessary for you. Use the guiding questions for your cornell notes.
Exponential Functions & their Graphs
  • What is an exponential function? (pg 276)
  • Review identifying and computing exponential functions (Ex 1 & 2 pg 277)
  • How can you derive an exponential function from its table of values? (Ex 3 pg 278)
  • What is exponential growth and decay? (pg 279)
  • How can you transform an exponential function? (Ex 4 pg 280)
The Natural Base e
  • Review the basic exponential function. (Pg 281)
  • What is e and why is it "the" exponential function? (pg 281 - 282)
  • How can you transform an exponential function with base e? (Ex 5 pg 282-283)
Logistic Functions and their Graphs
  • Review the basic logistic function. (Pg 283)
  • What is a logistic growth function and why is it needed? (page 283)
  • What are the variations of the logistic growth function? (page 283)
  • How do you find the y-intercept and horizontal asymptotes of a logistic growth function? (Ex 6 pg 284)
Population Models
  • How is exponential growth used to model population growth? (Ex 7 & Ex 8 pg 285)

STEP 3: Reading
Read the following page(s) and take any extra notes as needed.
  • Read pages 276 - 285.
  • Make sure to read the paragraphs between the examples.
